THE 4 MILLION CAR GAP: HOW TOYOTA TURNED HYBRIDS INTO AN UNTOUCHABLE LEAD

Toyota didn’t just keep its crown as the world’s top automaker in 2025—it widened the gap. With global sales reaching 11.32 million vehicles, Toyota extended its lead for a sixth straight year, powered largely by one decision it was once mocked for: going all-in on hybrids.

As EV demand cooled in key markets like the U.S. and Europe, hybrids surged. Toyota sold 4.43 million hybrid vehicles alone—more than the entire global sales volume of Hyundai Motor Group. For buyers wary of charging infrastructure and range anxiety, hybrids offered efficiency without lifestyle compromise. Toyota happened to be ready.

Hyundai Motor Group, by contrast, delivered a mixed performance. Combined sales of Hyundai and Kia reached about 7.27 million units, leaving a 4.05 million-unit gap behind Toyota—roughly equivalent to four decades of Renault Korea’s domestic sales. Even more telling was the momentum: Toyota added roughly half a million units year-over-year, while Hyundai Group added just 40,000.

The breakdown explains the stagnation. Hyundai sales dipped slightly, essentially flat year-over-year, while Kia posted a record high—but with modest growth. Revenue remained strong, topping roughly $225 billion, but unit growth—the real indicator of market pull—lagged behind.

Trade policy made things worse. U.S. tariffs hit Hyundai and Kia’s price competitiveness just as EV subsidies were being trimmed. Operating profits fell sharply for both brands. Toyota, meanwhile, was insulated by its higher North American production share and a lineup dominated by hybrids that buyers were already comfortable with.

Industry analysts now see Toyota’s once-cautious EV strategy as a strategic masterstroke. As the market resets around practicality, efficiency, and convenience, Toyota looks less conservative and more prescient. For Hyundai Motor Group, catching up won’t be about a single breakthrough model. It will require reshaping its powertrain mix in a market that, for now, has chosen hybrids as the safe bet.
