Volkswagen has unveiled the first official teaser image of its next-generation Golf, offering a glimpse into the future direction of this iconic model. The image, released by Germany's IG Metall labor union, was first presented during a Volkswagen employee meeting on Wednesday.
At the event, Volkswagen reaffirmed its commitment to producing the Golf at its Wolfsburg plant in Germany, maintaining the model's German heritage.
Industry sources, including Autocar, report that the next-generation Golf is scheduled to debut in 2028. Volkswagen plans to launch both internal combustion engine and all-electric variants simultaneously.
The teaser silhouette reveals significant design evolution from the current Golf. Most notably, the rear end adopts a more upright stance, complemented by a more pronounced roof spoiler.
These design changes are likely driven by aerodynamic considerations, a critical factor in enhancing energy efficiency and range, particularly for electric vehicles.
Speculation suggests the teased vehicle could be the all-electric version, as the wheel placement closely matches Volkswagen’s next-generation Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) architecture.
The electric Golf variant is expected to be built on this SSP platform and may carry the ID. Golf moniker, strategically differentiating it from its combustion-engine counterpart.
Prioritizing user-friendly design, Volkswagen confirmed that future models will retain physical controls for essential functions like climate settings and volume adjustment.
The electric Golf is set to feature an advanced 800V electrical system. Coupled with cutting-edge battery technology, this setup promises to deliver improved range and faster charging capabilities.
